According to Basarnas, Divernet and DIVE Magazine, the Sea Safari Cruises liveaboard Sea Safari VII, the largest ironwood phinisi in the fleet with 14 en-suite cabins for up to 28 guests, caught fire between about 8.30am and 8.50am on 2 May 2024 off Pulau Penga near Labuan Bajo, while chartered by Scuba Junkie Komodo. Everyone aboard abandoned ship; Basarnas and DIVE gave 33 aboard, while an eyewitness count implied around 42. Four people were hospitalised with burns or respiratory complaints, and the vessel was destroyed. British passenger Mike Day, a trained firefighter, told Divernet the crew's firefighting equipment and response were extremely poor; Sea Safari Cruises responded that the situation unfolded rapidly and that the evacuation was completed collectively in roughly 19 minutes. Both accounts are on record.

ERA5 reanalysis via Open-Meteo, sampled 11 km from the recorded position. Modelled conditions across the whole day, not an observation at the vessel: a grid this coarse averages away the localised squall or wave a report may describe. Not a statement of cause.
