According to Royal Thai Navy statements reported by Khaosod English, and to Divernet and DIVE Magazine, the liveaboard Reggae Queen, also known by the Thai name Sawan, capsized around 9am on 23 December 2023 in strong winds and swells of three metres and more, about four nautical miles south of the Surin Islands, having left port the previous day for the marine park. Sixteen of those aboard were rescued by a fishing boat. Two people were missing: Millicent Young, 57, a British artist resident in Thailand, and the vessel's Thai cook, Samniang Thaichana. An empty life raft was recovered by 27 December, after which searchers concentrated on the wreck, believed to lie at about 60 metres; neither of the missing was reported found. Reported counts differ: the navy gave 14 aboard with 12 rescued, while dive-press accounts gave 13 guests and five crew with 16 rescued. The navy's statement rendered the boat's operation as "Sawan Tour"; no source states the operating company more precisely, so no operator is recorded.
